The Storyteller

Extract from: Border Living Magazine (Spring 2012)

The Border Region is to experience an artistic showing like it hasn’t seen before. ‘The Magnitude of Little Things’, an exhibition by vibrant West Wyalong artist, Lucy Buttenshaw, will show her latest works in a collection to celebrate the simple but often magical moments in life. Lucy’s paintings exude a sense of magic in themselves; her work is exciting and unexpected and thoroughly engaging.

Lucy’s standout style, using strong imagery that often suggests a story, moves through glimpses of moments in life – listening to music, smelling the flowers and encountering wonderful sights and creatures. “ While we all have major happenings in our lives that are noted and recorded by those concerned, the rest of our lives are made up of lots of little things strung together,’ says Lucy. “My imagery is recognisable, but I often play around with the relative proportion of one thing to another and combine unusual things to bring attention to the ‘moment’ or ‘story’.”

“Rather like the characters in my paintings, I love adventures. Travelling through the countryside is a great adventure for me, maybe because I have a very strong attachment to my own landscape around West Wyalong. My imagery comes from things around me, so not surprisingly, rural elements feature quite strongly in some of my works. I am excited to bring this collection of work gathered from my experiences to another rural area in the North West Slopes and Plains.”

“When Gig Moses phoned me about an exhibition, I was struck with the energy and professionalism within Moree Gallery, and was delighted to have been included in the exhibition programme for 2012.”

The obvious emotional elements apparent in Lucy’s work has meant that the journey undertaken to reflect ‘little things’ has been anything but ordinary. For Lucy, the making of art is an adventure itself; going to new places and heights by working on new material, discovering new things and experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions along the way. “I hope that in producing works for ‘The Magnitude of Little Things’ that I have moved on and gathered more ways of communicating my ideas. It is a collection of little experiences that mean a lot personally!”

“However, I always hope that people will attach their own stories to the paintings and share these in conversation. I have been to Moree only on one occasion in the past, on a sparkling sunny day, and am looking forward to my return in September and joining in with these conversations!”
